PJI Celebrates Its Founding with Anniversary Event, Video, and Art Installation

The Promise of Justice Initiative is celebrating its tenth year as a nonprofit organization working to create positive change for people in the criminal legal system. In recognition of the impact that PJI’s hardworking team has had over the last decade, the following video was produced and debuted at the 10 Year Anniversary Event held on Saturday, November 12, 2022.

At the 10 Year Anniversary Event, PJI staff and families, partners, former clients and families, and friends and supporters gathered at PJI’s office and event space to enjoy connection and reflection with food, drinks, and live music. Founding PJI board member Andrea Armstrong served as emcee and welcomed guests to the evening. During the event, PJI board member Mark Cunningham recognized the work of Mercedes Montagnes, PJI’s outgoing executive director who has been an integral part of the organization since its inception in 2012.

Former PJI executive director Sarah Ottinger and founding PJI board member Judge Calvin Johnson delivered remarks in recognition of the contributions of Neal Walker and John “JT” Thompson, two advocates who made a lasting impact on Louisiana’s criminal legal system and in whose honor we posthumously named our Walker-Thompson Fellowship. Despite chilly weather, well over 100 guests attended the event.

Hallway Art Installation

We collaborated with justice design firm Colloqate to create an interactive art exhibit in the main hallway of PJI’s office which was completed just in time for our 10 Year Event. It provides an overview into the work, timeline, and overall impact PJI has had in the last decade.

A Community Effort

The event’s success was made possible with the support and partnership of a number of sponsors and vendors, and we are grateful to our staff and friends who contributed to its success, as well.

Our Vendors/Partners

In addition to the event, video, and hallway art installation, PJI also released a report in September that highlights our work and shares stories of impact and change. Click here to read the report.
