PJI Statement on Acts of Police Violence Against New Orleans Protesters
We at PJI are outraged that last night’s peaceful protest in New Orleans on I-10 West was met with acts of violence from the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD). We cannot think of a more dangerous place to deploy tear gas and rubber bullets than on top of a bridge, where the possibility of a stampede, loss of vision, disorientation, and distance from medical treatment, create potential for serious threats to occur.
PJI continues to support the rights of protesters, systemic justice reform, and the fight for justice for the men and women who have been terrorized and killed by racist, systemic injustice in this country. As we did in Baton Rouge, after the tragic killing of Alton Sterling, PJI will be monitoring the treatment of protesters by law enforcement and holding our leaders to task in the city and throughout the state.
If you had these experiences in New Orleans and want to report NOPD misconduct and violence you can send these to the New Orleans Independent Police Monitor where your complaints are crucial to protect communities from police brutality and are kept confidential. Submit photos, videos, or written accounts here: https://nolaipm.gov/file-a-complaint/
If you are in Louisiana, but outside of New Orleans, The ACLU of Louisiana is compiling incident reports about police misconduct and violence across the state. Use this form to report police brutality and constitutional rights violations. https://intake.laaclu.org/
