New Beginnings

After 10 years fighting alongside our clients and community, I have decided that this year will be my last at PJI. On December 31st, 2022, I will step down as Executive Director. Between now and the end of the year, I will continue our work, while assisting the board in our search for a new leader and preparing the organization for transition.

Leading this work has been an immeasurable pleasure that I have loved more than I thought was possible. Over the last ten years, PJI has grown from an idea to a thriving, mission-focused organization with a dynamic staff that is making bold and necessary impacts alongside people impacted by Louisiana’s criminal legal system. I could not be more proud of all we have accomplished. The PJI team, along with our partners, supporters, and clients, will always be an inspiration to me.

I am excited and optimistic about PJI’s future. Under the leadership of our strong board of directors, PJI is poised to welcome a new leader who will have the opportunity to elevate our work in Louisiana and beyond. I know that PJI is ready for this and I will ensure that our next Executive Director has what they need to lead the organization successfully into its next phase. Stay tuned for more information about the transition in the coming weeks.

As for me, I'm not going anywhere. My family is rooted in New Orleans and we plan to stay here for many years. While I don't yet know exactly what comes next, I will continue to fight for a criminal legal system focused on healing and safety.

With gratitude,

Mercedes Montagnes
